RT reports: The UN Security Council with 14 of 15 members voting in favor has passed a resolution demanding an end to the construction of Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian territories.
The resolution was introduced to the UNSC by New Zealand, Malaysia, Venezuela and Senegal. The US was the only nation to abstain from voting. Earlier, Trump and Israeli authorities also called on the US to veto the resolution.
The United Nations Security Council has passed a resolution that calls for an immediate end to Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. The motion was passed after the United States refused to veto it.
Late yesterday (Dec. 23), the United Nations Security Council voted on a resolution to conclude Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories. 14 of 15 council members were in agreement – just the U.S. abstained. Applause broke out in the room following the draft resolution approval.
Originally suggested by Egypt and withdrawn under pressure from Israel and U.S. president-elect Donald Trump, the resolution was put forward for a vote this afternoon by New Zealand, Malaysia, Venezuela and Senegal. It expresses that Israeli settlements on Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, which includes East Jerusalem, have “no legal validity” and demanded a cease to “all Israeli settlement activities.”
Israel’s permanent representative at the UN, Danny Danon, denounced the resolution and those who voted for it, inquiring the room full of Security Council members afterward, “Would you ban the French from building in Paris?”
Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s Prime Minister, also minced no words in a statement released in reaction to the vote, and signaled that the more things transform, the more they stay the same. “Israel rejects this shameful anti-Israel resolution at the UN and will not abide by its terms,” he stated.
For Palestinians, the resolution’s passage is at least a symbolic win, regardless of what Netanyahu and others threaten. “This is a day of victory for international law, a victory for civilized language and negotiation and a total rejection of extremist forces in Israel,” explained chief Palestinian Authority peace negotiator Saeb Erekat in a announcement.

The U.S. has shunned talking about the Israeli settlement activity as “illegal” as a concession to Israel, which hopes to incorporate bigger settlement blocs if a two-state remedy with the Palestinians is achieved. Today’s resolution, clearly saying that settlement is illegal, is an international rebuke from other nations, rejecting that American circumspection and Israel’s actions though it imposes no sanctions. To alter the vote that passed today, a follow-up vote will have to be recommended – but that proposition needs to survive the veto strength of the Britain, China, France, or Russia, which appears not likely given the interest for today’s resolution.
It was President Barack Obama’s choice to abstain from the U.N. vote right now, and the abstention is in accord with Obama’s frosty relationship with Netanyahu and the Israeli right wing.
Alternatively, president-elect Trump is very much in alignment with the present Israeli prime minister, and had pressed the U.S. to veto this resolution just before it went up for vote. Trump’s pick for Ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, is hawkish and opposes the two-state option for peace-which is the best goal of today’s U.N. Security Council resolution.
Construction of Israeli settlements undermines initiatives to reach peace by signaling Israel’s intent to continue growing. Halting settlements would evidently increase the Palestinians’ faith in Israel’s seriousness about the peace process and about giving back occupied land.
Soon after the vote, Trump tweeted that things will be different at the U.N. once he’s in office. But “different” is a fairly obscure goal and the businessman has never had to deal with Middle East politics for real.
As to the U.N., things will be different after Jan. 20th.

Trump has won his ticket to the “Golden Dance”. Now it’s time to dance. Bluster has gotten him far. But the challenging question of peace for Israel and Palestine has stumped the world’s greatest minds and its finest leaders for decades.
Don’t lose focus on the fact that he has hired the most renowned, formidable, and deeply respected special forces soldiers in the world to protect his life and family.
An intriguing Federal Security Service (FSB) information bulletin circulating in the Kremlin today reports that the Security Council (SC) has authorized the Monarch Air Group to use 7 private charter flights to move “special resources” to New York City and Washington D.C. beginning on 20 January 2017 in order to fulfill a contract with the Moscow based private security company RSB-Group—and who, in turn, were contracted with this past week by President-elect Donald Trump to “protect his person, family and properties” from the “demonic globalist elites” seeking his destruction.
