RIGHT AFTER US ANNOUNCES NEW SANCTIONS, PUTIN MAKES HIS MOVE – GIVES AMERICA A DEADLINE…
Russia’s Foreign Ministry ordered the U.S. Embassy in Russia Friday to reduce the number of its diplomats to 455 by Sept. 1 in response to the Senate’s authorization of a new sanctions plan in opposition to Russia.
Russia will also shut down the embassy’s warehouse facilities and its recreational getaway close to Moscow.
U.S. Embassy spokeswoman Maria Olson did not state how many Americans will need to get away from Russia to meet the new requirements.
Olson stated Ambassador John Tefft “expressed his strong disappointment and protest” to Russia’s move.
The Senate voted overwhelmingly on Thursday, 98-2, to pass the “Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act,” which would enforce new sanctions on Russia for its participation “in eastern Ukraine, cyber intrusions and attacks, and human rights violators.”
The House also authorized the new sanctions plan on Tuesday with an overwhelming margin of 419-3.
The legislation would drastically limit President Donald Trump’s authority to ease the new sanctions without previous approval from Congress.
“To waive sanctions on Russia, Trump would have to send Congress a record explaining and justifying his choice, and lawmakers would then get 30 days to choose whether to permit it,” based on NPR’s Miles Parks.
Russia decried the new sanctions package as anti-Russian saber-rattling by the U.S. government.
“The U.S. is stubbornly taking one crudely anti-Russian step after another, using the utterly fictitious pretext of Russian interference in its internal affairs,” the Russian Foreign Ministry stated.
Russian President Vladimir Putin mentioned Thursday his government would have to retaliate “at some moment” if the new sanctions package becomes U.S. law.
“As you know, we are exercising restraint and patience, but at some moment we’ll have to retaliate. It’s impossible to endlessly tolerate this boorishness towards our country,” Putin stated during a visit to Finland, as outlined by Reuters.
The new sanctions package will be delivered to Trump’s desk for his signature, but it’s still uncertain whether he will sign the bill into law or veto the measure.
Incoming White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci stated Thursday on CNN that the president could veto the measure to negotiate even tougher sanctions in opposition to Russia.
“He may sign the sanctions exactly the way they are, or he may veto the sanctions and negotiate an even tougher deal against the Russians,” Scaramucci stated.
But White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders explained after the House passed its version of the bill that Trump was ultimately waiting for the final legislative package to turn up at his desk just before making his choice.
Even if the president vetoes the sanctions package, the overwhelming margins of approval in both the House and the Senate suggest the measure is veto-proof.
Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker, R-Tenn., stated Thursday he doubts Trump will veto the legislation.
“I had a conversation with the President just in the last few days, I’ve talked to Tillerson Tuesday night. I don’t think that’s real,” Corker informed reporters. “I just can’t imagine – you look at the vote count.
