Democrats never anticipated the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election would land squarely at the feet of Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton. Much to their surprise, it may possibly just have.
On Tuesday, The Hill released a breakthrough article detailing an FBI investigation into Russian corruption around the time the US government agreed to allow a Russian government-backed energy company to purchase 20 percent of the US’ national uranium reserves. Special Counsel Robert Mueller was FBI Director at the time of the Russian nuclear corruption investigation, yet he failed to inform Congress of the potential bribery before they made their decision to cede the strategic resource.
Former US Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI) was serving as the chair of the House Intelligence Committee behind the decision to allow the sale of Uranium One to Russia’s Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation. Yet, Rogers says he was never informed by the FBI that Rosatom officials were implicated in bribing American government officials – including then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, whose State Department also approved the deal.
“Not providing information on a corruption scheme before the Russian uranium deal was approved by US regulators and engage appropriate congressional committees has served to undermine US national security interests by the very people charged with protecting them,” explained Rogers. “The Russian efforts to manipulate our American political enterprise is breathtaking.”
Immediately after Donald Trump won the presidency on November 8th, 2016, the outgoing administration of former President Obama starting raising concerns about the Russian government’s efforts to interfere in the US General Election.
According to Obama administration officials, the Russian government interfered in the 2016 presidential election to undermine democracy in America in addition to supporting Trump’s candidacy.
In October, the notorious Trump-dossier was released by Fusion GPS in connection with former MI6 agent Christopher Steele – a dossier whose creation was financed in part by the Democrat Party. The salacious document, which relied on intelligence from the Russian government, accused President Trump of sexual deviancy and suggested he had been blackmailed by the Russian government.
While the Trump-dossier has since been thoroughly discredited, the allegation included in the document-in combination with the warnings from former President Obama’s operatives-offered enough impetus for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to appoint former FBI Director Robert Mueller to head an investigation into Russian collusion with the Trump campaign.
Mueller was appointed as the Special Counsel and was tasked with investigating potential Russian intervention in the 2016 election, in addition to investigating the possibility that President Trump, or members of his campaign or transition team, had connections to the Russian government.
Mueller was appointed because of his supposed impartiality. He was originally appointed FBI Director by former-President George W. Bush and served under Obama for five years.
However, the recent report by The Hill undermines Mueller’s claim to impartiality. According to The Hill, Mueller was the FBI Director while the agency was investigating Russian interference into the American government.
Mueller had knowledge that the Clinton Foundation was receiving major donations from the same people petitioning the government for the sale of Uranium One. Yet, Mueller did not think this information was relevant to lawmakers deciding on the sale of Uranium One.
In light of these facts, there is mounting evidence that Special Counsel Mueller’s motives in his investigation should be scrutinized.
Newly released documents show that the FBI had been investigating Russian nuclear officials as early as 2009, after discovering that they were engaged in bribery, extortion, and other shady activities on US soil. Federal agents used undercover agents to gather audio recordings, paper records, and emails, which showed Russia had done these things, in violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
Even worse, the FBI had obtained eyewitness accounts and physical documents, indicating that Russian nuclear officials had routed millions of dollars as a “donation” to the Clinton Foundation. Yet rather than bringing the charges to light, the FBI permitted then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to sign off on the controversial deal, which many have argued was unfairly generous to Putin.
The Hill reports that this entire scheme was conducted “with the consent of higher level officials” in Russia who shared in some of the profits from said bribery. Many Americans are left wondering how the Clinton Foundation has not been investigated yet, and whether or not President Trump will remain true on his promise to “throw her in jail.”
