US president Donald Trump declines to rule out eventual military action against Pyongyang and conveys frustration that Tokyo didn’t shoot down a Korean projectile.
POTUS Trump stated that the United States “will not stand” for Pyongyang threatening America or its allies. When inquired by reporters if Japan is committed and ready for military options towards North Korea, POTUS Trump had this to say:
“He will shoot ’em out of the sky when he completes the purchase of lots of additional military equipment from the United States. He will easily shoot them out of the sky.”~POTUS Trump
Japan is already in talks to purchase more of the SM-3 Interceptor missiles, they are a defensive weapon the U.S. Navy utilizes to eliminate short- to intermediate-range ballistic missiles.
The flexibility of the SM-3 interceptor to be both land- and sea-based provides countries that do not have ballistic missile defense-enabled navies to take advantage of the incredible capacity to secure large areas of land. This is often known as regional defense. The SM-3 missile can cover larger areas with fewer installations, when in comparison with other “lower tier” missile defense solutions
The interceptor utilizes sheer force, instead of an explosive warhead, to eliminate its target. Its “kill vehicle” hits threats with the force of a 10-ton truck traveling 600 mph. This technique, known as “hit-to-kill,” has been likened to intercepting a bullet with another bullet.
Japan, under its Constitution, can shoot down a missile only when it is aimed at the country or in case debris are plummeting on to its territory.
Some members of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party point out that it could be possible to shoot down a missile headed toward Guam in case it triggers existential threat to the US as Japan’s ally, but experts state that is questionable.
