President Trump promised to take care of the growing threat on the Korean Peninsula, and so far he’s making good on his message.
Between his discussions with China to get the rogue North Korean regime under control, and domestic attempts to sanction and punish its leader Kim Jung Un, he’s done more than the past two administrations to reign in the madman. On Monday morning, he took another significant step in ending the nuclear threat from the brutal dictatorship – declaring it a state sponsor of terrorism.
In a press conference, the President explained the terror designation is a component of the “maximum pressure campaign” in opposition to the regime, and that the move was long past due.
“Today the United States is designating North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism. Should have happened a long time ago. Should have happened years ago,” Trump stated.
The announcement comes on the heels of his hugely productive tour of five Asian nations, in which he talked about with foreign officials the best route forward for ending the north’s nuclear program.
North Korea at this point joins Iran, Sudan, Syria and other nations on the list of state sponsors of terrorism.
President Trump’s strategy to dealing with the hermit kingdom greatly contrasts that of Barack Obama, who attempted bribing the North with aid to prevent them from pursuing nuclear capabilities and frequently cautioned he might get the military involved but never truly followed through on any of his threats. The truth is, Obama’s soft rhetoric and spineless leadership unquestionably aided the North in its goal to obtain a nuclear weapon, as Rocket Man knew he had nothing to fear from our novice White House resident.
Such was apparent when Obama sent a “personal letter” to Kim Jung Un requesting that he cease his nuclear development, only to have North Korea carry out even more missile and nuclear tests. For the most part, Obama warned the North of “further isolation” if it continued down a nuclear path, all while displaying weakness when it came to backing up his rhetoric.
Consequently, American student Otto Warmbier was captured by North Korea and tortured, only to be released, nearly dead, when President Trump stepped in to compel North Korea’s hand.
Warmbier would end up passing away just days after returning to his family in the United States.
