Proof for Planet Nine continually mounts, as two unique studies present support of its existence, even if NASA and space researchers have yet to find it.
The Sun recently reported that:
Computer simulations show Planet Nine would have to be three times larger than Earth to make the changes we can see in some KBO orbits.
That means its mass is five to 10 times greater than Earth’s, say scientists at the California Institute of Technology.
Planet Nine orbits the sun on a vast, elliptical path that takes around 20,000 years to complete.
This orbit is between 400 and 800 times farther away from the sun than Earth.
The hypothetical planet that may be detailed as “the solar system’s missing link,” Planet Nine (also referred to as Planet X) may be part of the lexicon for several years, first talked about in 2014.
It was brought up for a second time in 2016, when Caltech astrophysicists Mike Brown and Konstantin Batygin first wrote about it.
Brown and Batygin, who published the new studies, assume they now know how massive the planet is.
“At five Earth masses, Planet Nine is likely to be very reminiscent of a typical extrasolar super-Earth,” stated Batygin in a statement.”
It is the solar system’s missing link of planet formation.
Over the last decade, surveys of extrasolar planets have revealed that similar-sized planets are very common around other sun-like stars. Planet Nine is going to be the closest thing we will find to a window into the properties of a typical planet of our galaxy.”
“Based on their findings, the team think we could discover the hidden world soon.
But finding it will require a dedicated survey using some of the world’s biggest telescopes.
“It is likely that if Planet Nine exists, it will be discovered within the coming decade,” scientists said.
Space experts have long suspected that a ninth planet is lurking in the outer reaches of our solar system.’
The two new studies, published in The Astronomical Journal and Science Direct, indicate
The evidence of the hypothetical planet, which may perhaps take as many as 1,000 years to discover, comes from a cluster of objects located in the Kuiper Belt, a field of icy celestial bodies beyond Neptune.
“To date, the only two suggestions for the cause of these apparent clusterings have been either the effects of observational bias or the existence of a distant giant planet in an eccentric inclined orbit known as Planet Nine,” reads the summary of the initial study.
The researchers looked to see if observational foundation was behind the clustering and then came up with a probability of one in 500 that it was false.
“Though this analysis does not say anything directly about whether Planet Nine is there, it does indicate that the hypothesis rests upon a solid foundation,” Brown included in the statement.
The second study, entitled “The Planet Nine Hypothesis,” gives thousands of unique computer models and gives a innovative estimate that Planet Nine is smaller and closer to the Sun than previously predicted.
They have currently predicted that it has an orbital semimajor axis of approximately 400 astronomical units (AU).
One AU is the distance between the center of the Earth and the center of the Sun, or approximately 92.9 million miles.
Batygin acknowledges that it’s going to be a difficult task to locate it, but doesn’t feel it will take 1,000 years.
“Although finding Planet Nine astronomically is a great challenge, I’m very optimistic that we will image it within the next decade,” he stated.
Proof of Planet Nine?
In October 2017, Batygin stated that there are “five different lines of observational evidence” that point to the existence of Planet Nine.
The five lines of proof are:
Six known objects in the Kuiper Belt, all of which have elliptical orbits that point in the same direction.
The orbits of the objects are all tilted the same way; 30 degrees “downward.”
Computer simulations that show there are more objects “tilted with respect to the solar plane.”
Planet Nine could be responsible for the tilt of the planets in our solar system; the plane of the planet’s orbit is tilted about 6 degrees compared to the Sun’s equator
Some objects from the Kuiper Belt orbit in the opposite direction from everything else in the solar system.
“No other model can explain the weirdness of these high-inclination orbits,” Batygin said at the time.
“It turns out that Planet Nine provides a natural avenue for their generation.
These things have been twisted out of the solar system plane with help from Planet Nine and then scattered inward by Neptune.”
In October 2017, NASA launched a statement stating that Planet Nine might be 20 times further from the Sun than Neptune is, going so far as to declare “it is now harder to imagine our solar system without a Planet Nine than with one.”
