Notable attorney Alan Dershowitz is a regular Fox News guest, but for some purpose the network under no circumstances seems to question him about his participation in a high-profile case that continues to generate news.
On Nov. 28, 2018, when the Miami Herald unveiled that, in 2008, convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein’s lawyers, a group that involved Dershowitz, had pressured then-US attorney Alexander Acosta- currently serving as Donald Trump’s labor secretary-into bargaining a sweetheart plea deal for the billionaire financier, who was arrested of molesting more than 100 underage girls.
Since that news broke, Dershowitz has made an appearance on Fox News a total of 27 times. Not once has anybody on the network questioned him about his client or his link to the secret plea deal a judge has since stated illegal.
Over the past year, Dershowitz has surfaced as a go-to legal analyst for Fox News. His long, tremendously public legal career, coupled with him being a lifelong Democrat who is often crucial of Robert Mueller, has made him an alluring guest for Fox programs that nonstop rail in opposition to the special counsel’s probe of Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Consequently, the Harvard professor only ever appears to talk about one thing with Fox News-and it is certainly not his high-profile client.
On the night of Nov. 28, hours after the Herald bombshell, Dershowitz appeared on Tucker Carlson’s primetime talk show. The topic of their chat? The Mueller probe.
The next evening, Dershowitz made an appearance on Sean Hannity’s show. The subject there? The Mueller “witch hunt.” Same thing the evening after that, when Dershowitz made an appearance on Laura Ingraham’s primetime show; and the subsequent Monday when he yet again joined Carlson.
Not a single concern about Epstein, even as Dershowitz confessed to Axios that he still advises the billionaire pedophile.
On Dec. 4, Epstein settled a civil fight and apologized to his victims’ lawyer for trying to “defame” him. Two days afterwards, the U.S. Department of Justice declared it had opened an investigation into the 2008 plea deal that helped Epstein to refrain from confronting his victims.
Over the next few months, Dershowitz made an appearance on Fox News another 16 times, which includes three talks with Tucker Carlson about the Mueller probe (which includes one hit in which Dershowitz defended the host against advertiser boycotts over his anti-immigrant rhetoric), and six with Hannity to talk about – wait for it – the Mueller probe. No one questioned about the Epstein case.
And then on Feb. 21, a federal judge ruled that Florida prosecutors, which includes Trump’s labor secretary, had broken the law by signing the plea deal brokered by Epstein’s lawyers, which includes Dershowitz, without speaking to the victims.
That night, Dershowitz made an appearance on Laura Ingraham’s show. She did not ask a single question about the Epstein news. Rather, they talked about Empire star Jussie Smollett being charged with filing a bogus police report.
And then on March 11, a federal court took the first step in unsealing documents associated with the case-a move Dershowitz has stated he encourages. But when the notable attorney made an appearance on Fox News on March 11 and March 12, hosts Ingraham and Melissa Francis respectively questioned him about “Democratic anti-Semitism” and the college-admissions cheating scandal.
It’s not as though Fox News is entirely disinterested in the Epstein case.
Since the Miami Herald story was printed, Fox has reported on the case at least 12 times, which includes dispatching on-air correspondents to cover its developments. Midday news anchor Martha MacCallum once even mentioned Dershowitz’s link to the case on-air-albeit in short.
In an email, Dershowitz stated he never asked that Fox News keep him out of their Epstein coverage. In truth, the lawyer stated, he has brought up on Fox the allegations that he took part in the billionaire pedophile’s sex-trafficking ring.
“I actually raised it in discussing the case of the actor who falsely accused people of attacking him,” Dershowitz explained, referring to Smollett. (Based on transcripts, the lawyer only vaguely alluded to having himself been the target of a “false report.”)
“I’m happy to discuss it on any media because I have nothing to hide and have overwhelming evidence that the story was entirely made up.”
Fox News didn’t promptly reply to a demand for comment.
